Lightning safety tips
Florida is known as the 'Lightning Capital of the World,' where an average of 10 people are killed by bolts from the sky each year. Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue offers the following lightning safety tips:
If outdoors, avoid water, high ground, open spaces, metal objects.
Open shelters such as canopies, picnic pavilions and trees are dangerous. Seek an enclosed building or vehicle.
If caught outdoors, crouch with feet together and cover ears with hands.
If indoors, stay away from doors and windows; do not use telephones; turn off electronics and appliances; stay off the computer.
SUN AND SKIN PROTECTION
Seek the shade, especially between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M.
Do not burn.
Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.
Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours.
Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
See your physician every year for a professional skin exam
Sports Drink or Water with a Workout
|
Staying hydrated during physical activity is essential. Plan to drink about 4 to 12 oz. of fluid for every 20 minutes of exercise.
If you workout less than 60 minutes, water is |
usually all you need. After that, a sports drink might be helpful. Save money with these easy sports drink recipes:
For average athletes: mix one liter of water (about 4 cups) and a pinch of salt with 200 ml of frozen orange juice concentrate (a little more than 3/4 cup).
For athletes with low perspiration levels (such as gymnasts): use the recipe above but reduce to 100 ml of concentrate (a little less than 1/2 cup).
For endurance athletes (such as long-distance runners): use the first recipe and increase to 400 ml of frozen orange juice (about 1 3/4 cup). This mix provides extra carbohydrates and electrolytes.
Skip caffeinated soft drinks, energy drinks, and coffee. The caffeine flushes fluids out of your body.
